CORGI is a renowned regulatory organisation, who has ensured the safety of gas consumers for over 30 years.

CORGI was founded in 1970 as the Confederation for the Registration of Gas Installers who were tasked with ensuring that gas work was carried out safely. In 1991, the Health & Safety Executive asked CORGI to maintain a register of competent gas installers in the UK. With registration becoming a legal requirement CORGI then became the ‘Council for Registered Gas Installers'. Today CORGI provides a broad range of services supporting consumers, gas installers and associated trades and industries.

HR Software Procurement Process

With over 130 staff at CORGI's Head Office in Hampshire and a further 160 CORGI Inspectors out in the field the demands on CORGI's HR team are significant. Although already using an HR system, CORGI felt that it was unable to meet their current demands and more importantly it was unable to evolve and meet their specialist requirements in the future.

CIPD HR Software Show

CORGI attended the HR Software Show, the CIPD's leading annual event demonstrating the link between people, performance and technology. After receiving a number of demonstrations from different suppliers at the show and reviewing all of their information, CORGI created a shortlist of 3 suppliers who were invited in to provide detailed demonstrations of their software.

HR Software Supplier Demonstrations

CORGI wanted to ensure that they identified a supplier who could provide a software solution rich in functionality and had a comprehensive report writer. With this in mind CORGI invited the suppliers to perform on site demonstrations, which allowed representatives from CORGI to test the functionality of each supplier's software in greater detail.

CORGI also spoke with suppliers customers before opting for ASR and their solution HR Professional including modules in Personnel, Recruitment, Training and e-HR.

Sarah Horne, CORGI's Group HR Advisor comments:

"HR Professional presented itself as the most easy to use system of all the other HR software suppliers, and the fact that ASR's reporting tool was in built into their product and not a third party reporting tool was key to our final decision. Also, the flexibility of ASR's software and the fact that you can configure the software yourself also gave us the confidence that we were able to evolve with the system as our HR processes change".

Implementing ASR's Human Resources Software System

Upon issuing their order CORGI worked closely with ASR's customer services team who extracted all of the data from Corgi's old system as part of a successful implementation project.

Sarah Horne adds:

"The import process gave us the opportunity to do a lot of tidying up, refining variations in ‘sickness types', ‘vacancy types', etc. and involved a lot of data cleansing before getting all that historical data into HR Professional. There were no problems at all with the data import, which meant that via HR Professional's comprehensive reporting tool we were able to access management information immediately".

Comprehensive Training Programme

As well as having an experienced Customer Service Team, ASR run a comprehensive training program ensuring that users maximise the use of their software from day one. Each training course is run by a member of ASR's in-house training team in an ideal learning environment.

Sarah Horne has trained to System Administration level on HR Professional allowing her to see, first hand how flexible HR Professional is.

"From the beginning we were very clear about what we wanted the system to do and that was achieved.

As time went on new processes were introduced and I have been able to create new histories and configure HR Professional to facilitate them. This has been invaluable and the rapport that the Support Desk have with you if you do get stuck makes them very approachable - and they always call me back when they say they are going to".

ASR's e-HR Software (Self-Service)

HR Professional has been running smoothly for CORGI since 2003 and the next phase of the project is to roll out ASR's self service module. With over 160 CORGI Inspectors out in the field HR Professionals self-service Intranet will clearly benefit CORGI.

Remote workers will be able to carry out their day to day HR tasks in a paperless environment, eradicating the duplication of work and the possibility for paper work to be mislaid when out on the road. CORGI's new appraisal scheme will also be available online, again streamlining an extremely intensive paper process.

CORGI are looking forward to rolling out this innovative way of working initially at HQ and then outwards into the field. Although traditionally, inspectors may not have come from a technical background, ASR's self-service graphical user interface makes it extremely easy to use. Likewise, ASR provides self-service training to help customers successfully roll out their self service access.

ASR's User Group Meetings

ASR's frequent User Group meetings have also provided CORGI with an opportunity to discuss their plans for self service roll out with other customers; an issue Sarah Horne was keen to share:

"It was interesting discussing how they went about training their remote staff, the challenges they faced when setting up HR Professional's self service intranet and what things went well, giving me the chance to gain an understanding of how the system is used by others. I was then able to come back to HQ with that feedback full of ideas for us".
