The Tao of Everest - Ian Woodall In an unique and dramatic presentation at ASR's Winter User Group 2003 Ian Woodall brought the triumphs and tragedies of climbing the highest mountain in the world directly to our customers. At 8 a.m. on 29th May 1999 Ian Woodall stepped onto the summit of Mount Everest and into history, becoming one of only a handful of mountaineers to have climbed the highest mountain in the world from both its south (Edmund Hillary) and north (George Mallory) sides. During his first ascent from the south in 1996, he and his team were trapped in the killer storm described in John Krakauer's best seller Into Thin Air. They were the closest of any team to those stranded and dying in the storm. In its aftermath they retreated to base camp. While other teams were packing up to leave Ian and his team chose to try again, finally reaching the summit as the only team left on the mountain. Two years later while attempting the north side of Everest Ian stopped only a few hundred metres from the summit to try and help a dying American climber. The woman's first words were "Don't leave me". Yet Ian eventually had to leave her to secure the safety of his own team. Ian Woodall is the founder and director of The Tao of Everest, a unique programme of keynote addresses, workshops, and Everest base camp treks specialising in practical leadership. Customers learnt:
